Pennsylvania College of Technology recently received a $5,523 grant from the Williamsport-Lycoming Flags Across America Designated Fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania for the perpetual care of the 1,800-square-foot American flag that towers above the school’s main entrance.

Pennsylvania College of Technology is the recipient of a $5,523 grant dedicated to a campus and community landmark.

Grant dollars were awarded from the Williamsport-Lycoming Flags Across America Designated Fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania for the perpetual care of the 1,800-square-foot American flag that graces the college’s main entrance.

“We are very grateful to receive this award,” said Timothy O. Rissel, executive director of General Services at Penn College. “The average lifespan of our 30-by-60-foot main entrance flag is approximately four months, depending on weather conditions. At that time, the flag needs to be replaced and sent out for repairs. This generous contribution will be utilized to purchase three additional flags to replace ones that are no longer repairable.”

The flag was unfurled atop a 120-foot pole in November 2000 as part of a Flags Across America initiative spearheaded by the late Anthony L. DiSalvo. For years, it has served as the culmination location for an annual Flag Day march.

“The grant helps to ensure that this well-known landmark is maintained in a manner that
not only displays our patriotism as a campus and community but adds to the beautification of our main entrance,” Rissel said.

The prominent flag reflects the school’s strong support of the military. Penn College was ranked No. 2 in the Best Colleges for Veterans-Regional Colleges North category in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best Colleges rankings.
